The Cookshak’s Ultimate Catering Challenge: Jeep Jamboree
Behind the Scenes: Preparing for 250 Hungry Jeepers
Every year, The Cookshak takes on one of its biggest catering challenges: feeding 250 Jeep enthusiasts at the annual Jeep Jamboree in Big Bear. It’s an event filled with adventure, camaraderie, and of course, incredible food. While the Jeepers are out conquering rugged trails and pushing their vehicles to the limit, we’re back at the Elks Lodge, firing up the smokers and prepping a feast worthy of their efforts.
Sean, our pitmaster, starts preparations days in advance. Smoking brisket for 250 people isn’t something you do at the last minute—it takes time, patience, and skill. Every smoker is running around the clock, filling the air with the rich aroma of slow-cooked meats. Ribs, brisket, and chicken all get their share of attention, ensuring that when the Jeepers return from their day on the trails, they’re met with a meal they won’t forget.
The Atmosphere: A Night of Celebration
After a long day of off-roading, the Jeep Jamboree crowd returns to the Elks Lodge, exhausted but exhilarated. Their faces beam with excitement as they swap stories of getting stuck on tough trails and navigating challenging terrain. Each team has its own designated tables, lined with their team colors, and the energy in the room is electric. The clatter of clackers fills the air as friendly competition carries over into the evening.
The Feast: A Meal Worth the Wait
To feed such a large crowd efficiently, we set up two buffet lines, ensuring that everyone gets their meal within about 45 minutes. Over the years, we’ve fine-tuned the menu to suit the tastes of our guests. While tri-tip was a past favorite, the moment we introduced our smoked brisket, it quickly became the must-have dish for the main event.
For their multi-day event, we serve dinner on two separate nights. One night features our tender smoked ribs, paired with fresh vegetables and warm rolls. The second night offers a choice between our famous smoked brisket, juicy grilled chicken, or our vegetarian option: mushroom Wellington—savory sautéed mushrooms wrapped in a flaky, golden crust. A fresh salad rounds out the meal, ensuring there’s something for everyone.
A Tradition of Excellence
The Elks Lodge has been hosting this event for many years, but since The Cookshak took over the catering, the food has reached new heights. Jeep Jamboree has tested us by fire—both literally and figuratively—and we’ve risen to the challenge every time. Whether it’s perfecting our buffet setup, refining the menu, or keeping up with the high energy of the event, we’ve made this annual gathering something special for everyone involved.
We take pride in knowing that after a long day on the trails, these Jeepers can count on us for a hearty, satisfying meal. As they sit down with their plates piled high, laughing and recounting the day’s adventures, we know we’ve done our job right. And when they come back year after year, sometimes even for a second event in the fall, it’s the best compliment we could ask for.
Looking Forward to Next Year
As Jeep Jamboree continues to grow, we’re already thinking about how to make next year’s catering experience even better. But one thing’s for sure—the tradition of great food, great company, and unforgettable memories will continue. We can’t wait to fire up the smokers again and welcome the Jeepers back for another round of trail stories and incredible eats.
